Data Scientist - Investment Strategy Group, Investor Behavior and Retirement Team

The Investment Strategy Group (ISG) is a global team that serves as Vanguard’s in-house think tank, with subject matter experts based in North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region. The team produces industry-leading research to help shape perspectives, plays a central role in developing Vanguard’s investment and advice methodology, and informs decisions about our investment offerings and strategies. As the Investor Behavior and Retirement team within ISG, we aim to discover, share, and apply breakthrough insights about investor behavior and retirement to drive better decisions and outcomes for all investors.

As our team's resident data scientist, you’ll build data assets and conduct analytics to inform retirement policy, retirement plan design, investment products and strategies, and individual behavior, with the goal of enabling investors to achieve better financial outcomes. Bringing to bear one of the largest investor datasets in the world, including self-directed retail investor, advised client, and retirement plan participant data, you will directly support research on investor behavior, retirement, household finance, and public policy. You’ll have the opportunity to work with senior business partners to inform Vanguard products and services as well as collaborate on surveys and experiments to understand how and why investors think and behave as they do.

In this role you will…

  • Assemble, build, and manage new data sets drawing from a wide range of sources: Internal administrative data, third-party and public data sets, survey data, and experimental data.
  • Develop queries and perform extensive programming to access, transform, and prepare data for statistical modeling and analytics.
  • Build and maintain catalogue of available data elements, identify and diagnose data inconsistencies and errors, document data assumptions, and forage to fill data gaps.
  • Perform deep dive diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive analytics to support research insights, policy perspectives, scientific articles, and business decisions.
  • Work with and produce statistical analyses and data visualizations using large data sets in a cloud computing environment.
  • Provide real-time data analysis to support Vanguard’s response to media and regulator inquiries
  • Partner with team members and internal stakeholders to develop research hypotheses and translate into data requirements and analytic approach.
  • Provide consultation services as the go-to data expert on cross functional teams for large strategic initiatives.
  • Work with business partners to answer research questions, including those that inform Vanguard products and services. Prepare and deliver insight presentations and action recommendations. Communicate complex analytical findings and implications to business partners.
  • Work with academic partners in research collaborations.
  • Keep up with latest trends in data science and technology, identifying new ways to amplify research rigor and impact

What it takes

  • Minimum of three years related work experience in analytical roles or equivalent educational experience.
  • Proven experience writing code to access, transform, and prepare large scale data for analytics and modeling.
  • Experience coding in Python preferred.
  • Experience with AWS Athena and Sagemaker preferred.
  • Undergraduate degree in Analytics, Applied Mathematics, Economics, Finance, Statistics, Data Science or equivalent combination of training and experience required. Graduate degree preferred.
  • Team-first orientation and openness to learning new ideas, skills, and ways of working.

  • You should be aware this will designate you as an Investment Access Person and carries with it certain responsibilities and restrictions.
  • This is a hybrid role with Tues, Wed, Thurs in the office and Mon, Fri optionally remote.
