Job Description

The LEAP project is part of Sandia's Global Security portfolio of work. Sandia’s programs in Global Security range from nonproliferation and global threat reduction to homeland defense and critical asset protection. Our mission is to use science and technology, innovative research, and global engagement to counter threats, reduce dangers, and respond to disasters. We extend Sandia’s 60-year heritage in mission expertise for advanced remote sensing systems to monitor worldwide activities of consequence to national security.

On any given day, you will be called upon to:* Use Java and JavaFX to add new capabilities or to enhance existing features in ground station applications. Most of these features enhance situational awareness to allow for informed decision making. * Collaborate in an innovating environment to design and develop advanced data processing software for complex, real-time decision support systems.* Work on front-end as well as back-end code.* If there is interest and available time, take on a Computer Science Research Institute research project.

POSTING DURATION:

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

QUALIFICATIONS WE REQUIRE:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited undergraduate program
  • Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • U.S. citizen, asylee, refugee, or lawful permanent resident of the U.S.

QUALIFICATIONS WE DESIRE:

REQUIRED:* WORKING KNOWLEDGE OF JAVA, C++ OR C#* EXPERIENCE WITH OBJECT-ORIENTED DESIGN AND GENERAL SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT PROCESSES* COMPLETION OF A DATA STRUCTURES COURSE* INTEREST IN DECISION SUPPORT SOFTWARE

  • Desire and ability to work effectively in a small collaborative Agile development team
  • Desired :* Experience designing and building interactive data visualizations is a plus.* Familiarity with JavaFX is a plus.

The Quantitative Modeling and Analysis Department conducts research, development, and systems engineering in computer science and engineering to address important, complex national security problems. Key research areas include uncertainty quantification, optimization, inference modeling, data analysis, and algorithm development. Much of our application development work focuses on verification, validation and uncertainty quantification of complex problems. We provide trusted design and software development for large, operations software as well as detailed scientific computing software. The work is focused on providing efficient, validated information and technologies for use in predictive modeling and decision making.
