Job Description

WHAT’S DIFFERENT ABOUT A TRADING CAREER AT IMC?

IMC trades a wide range of financial instruments, in many different ways. This means we look for different types of traders; from the quantitative minds who enjoy the mathematical side of trading to more operationally focused personalities who thrive on interacting with brokers over the phone.

But all our traders and quants have one thing in common: they’re at their best when solving complex problems. Their insights into global events, market shifts and pricing ensure we always trade in the right place, at the right time.

YOUR JOURNEY AS A QUANT RESEARCHER – FUTURES TEAM

Your IMC journey begins with hands-on exposure on our Futures trading desk. Here you’ll undertake intensive on-the-job training, guided by experienced traders and technologists. When the time is right, you’ll link up with graduates from all three IMC regions as part of our seven-week global trading traineeship. This is your opportunity to deepen your understanding of IMC’s trading systems and strategies, financial markets and more.

After completing your training, you’ll rejoin your colleagues in London, ready to hit the ground running. Where you go from here depends on you. Our Futures trading operation is a growing part of our business, and it’s up to you to apply your skills and prove yourself in this dynamic and fast-moving environment. Of course, you’ll gain real recognition for your ideas and successes along the way.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

As a quant researcher in IMC’s Futures trading team, you will

  • Play a hands-on role in shaping – and executing – our Futures trading strategy
  • Predict the behaviours of Futures markets using statistical data modelling and machine learning
  • Use C++ and Python to execute trades based on the models you design
  • Work with traders and developers to improve the performance of models, and keep our trading ecosystem logical and consistent

REASONS WHY THIS IS YOUR FUTURE JOB

  • You love thinking about complex problems and how to solve them
  • You’re ready to apply your academic knowhow in a real-world context
  • You enjoy working in a dynamic, data-driven environment
  • You want to be close to the markets – and have a direct impact on your desk’s success

WHAT DO WE LOOK FOR?

  • Ideally a PhD in Statistics or a field with a strong statistical element (e.g. Physics or Maths)
  • Prior knowledge of C++ advantageous but not essential
  • Logical thinkers with a practical, can-do attitude
  • A genuine interest in trading and finance, though direct markets experience isn’t required
  • A collaborative mindset – at IMC we’re all in it together!
