The Department

Strategic Advisers, LLC is a registered investment advisor and wholly owned subsidiary of FMR LLC that provides investment management services to clients through Fidelity’s retail and institutional distribution channels. For more than 25 years Strategic Advisers has specialized in the design, construction, and management of asset allocation solutions, as well as the methodologies for many of Fidelity’s investment planning tools, to help investors reach their financial goals. With close to $700 billion in assets under management in a blend of Fidelity and third-party investment vehicles, the Strategic Advisers team of investment professionals’ constructs and manages asset allocation portfolios for more than a million customer accounts.

Role

The quantitative research analyst will be responsible for envisioning and executing all aspects of the quantitative underpinnings of portfolio construction, risk analysis, factor library development, regime modeling, and strategic/tactical asset allocation within our Alternatives Investment Team. Given the short track record of many liquid alternative strategies, this role requires creativity and thoughtfulness, experience with derivatives, and a willingness to be hands-on with data management and model maintenance and enhancements using SQL and R.

Located in Boston, you will be embedded with the SAI Alternatives Team and work closely with the portfolio manager, fundamental research analysts and risk manager who are managing the SA Alternatives Fund. You will report to the managing director of quantitative research.

Responsibilities

As the embedded quantitative analyst your primary responsibilities include:

  • Spearhead efforts to build the necessary databases and tools for portfolio construction and analysis in conjunction with the data strategy and technology teams.
  • Work closely with the Risk team to build bespoke risk reporting that considers account leverage, shorting, and derivatives positions
  • Build and maintain a factor library of hedge fund/alternative risk premia style factors to better understand the common risk factors and return drivers of liquid alternative strategies
  • Complete ad hoc requests for analysis from portfolio manager and senior management
  • Collaborate with the broader Multi-Asset class investment teams to explore the role liquid alternatives should play within different asset allocation models

Qualifications

We are seeking candidates who have the following characteristics:

  • Bachelor's degree required, masters’ degree strongly preferred
  • 7 plus years of work experience, at least 3 years of relevant work experience in liquid alternatives or derivatives
  • Hands-on programming and database skills e.g., R, Python, SQL
  • Willingness to collaborate closely with our business partners in data strategy, technology, and investment services
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
